Nordic Light.
The light is always changing
One of the things I like most about Åland is the light. It can change the way a familiar place looks from one hour to the next, and sometimes even from one minute to the next. The sea, the rocks and the islands seem to take on completely different colours depending on the season, the weather and the time of day.
Summer Light
Summer is probably when the Nordic light is most obvious. The days are long and the evenings seem to go on forever. The low evening sun can turn the rocks warm and golden, while the sea takes on shades of blue, pink and orange.
I often find myself staying out longer than planned, waiting to see what happens next. A sunset can look good for a few minutes and then suddenly become something completely different. That is usually when the camera comes out.

Winter light
Winter is a completely different story. The sun stays low in the sky and the days are short. The colours are often much more subdued, with blue, grey and pale yellow replacing the stronger colours of summer.
Snow and ice also change the way light behaves. A low winter sun can create long shadows across the snow and make even a familiar landscape look almost unfamiliar.
I actually find this kind of light just as interesting to photograph as the long summer evenings.
The same place, different light
One of the reasons I keep coming back to the Åland archipelago is that it never really looks the same. The same places can feel completely different depending on the season, the weather and the time of day. Summer and winter have their own character, and even a familiar view can look new when the light changes. The landscape hasn't changed that much. The light has.
